Our Vision

A just Tasmania, where people and communities of diverse genders and sexualities develop to their full potential.

Our Goals

To create environments through education, support and community development that encourages people of diverse sexualities and gender identities to develop to their full potential. To foster respect, understanding and celebration of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex contributions within Tasmanian communities. To recognise the right to express one’s sexuality or gender identity without fear and discrimination.

History

Working It Out (WIO) is a state wide community based organisation and the only organisation in Tasmania specifically aimed at supporting the interests of people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex (LGBTI). WIO arose from a 1998 report into the suicide deaths of several young gay men on the North-West coast of Tasmania. This study recognised the impact of negative social attitudes towards difference and the increased incidence of suicide and self-harming behaviours of sexual minority youth.

From smaller beginnings - with one part-time worker - WIO now has a worker in three regions, based at Burnie, Launceston and Hobart along with a state-wide coordinator. Our mission continues in supporting individuals and groups while also providing education and training to organisations.

WIO was initially funded by the Commonwealth Government through the National Suicide Prevention Strategy. This however was limited funding and when it did run out the State Government stepped in to enable WIO to continue providing services for LGBTI Tasmanians.

Today, WIO provides an integrated, three-level support service for LGBTI people. We offer free and confidential support, resources and information for individuals and couples around issues relating to sexuality and gender. Secondly, we offer in-service education and professional development to health and other service providers, along with community education and awareness raising workshops. The third area of focus is on peer based support programs and involvement in community development projects and cultural events.

Working It Out is committed to:

  • Creating environments through support, education, and community development that encourage LGBTI people and communities to reach their full potential
  • Fostering respect, understanding and tolerance within the Tasmanian community
  • Recognising the right to express one's sexuality without fear and discrimination

Management

Working It Out has a Management Committee comprising of people from around the State who bring a range of skills, experience and passion to the organisation. Working It Out believes in the importance of having a Management Committee that is diverse as possible and able to best represent the views of our ever growing community.

The Coordinator is also a member of the Management Committee acting as a liaison between the Committee and workers. While the Coordinator is responsible for the day to day running of the service, the Management Committee has overall legal, financial, staffing, policy and planning responsibility.

Being on the Working It Out Management Committee is a great opportunity to become involved in supporting the Tasmanian LGBTI community. If you are interested we want you! Please contact us for further Management Committee membership details.
